Ha, I think I screwed this up. ^^' Okay, Yes, the wife did die in the shipwreck. That is not what leads the guy to jump off the cliff though. For an additional hint, the third person on the ship was the guy's friend, and he did survive the ship wreck. C'mon guys, I wanna see you get this. XD
