Just finished this last night. It may not be the best comic book movie ever made, but it sure is entertaining. (And a heck of a lot better then Superman Returns*)
I'd have to agree with one criticism that has been thrown at the movie - the action scenes are pretty clunky. Personally, what's the point of filming a scene in China and, if you can't see the? That said, Nolan did a pretty good job with the source material. As a fan of the comics and a movie-goer, I enjoyed the fact that the movie really tried to be it's own thing. Sure, I loved the references and the (surprise!) appearances of some of the villains, but a film should always be its own thing.
Loved Michael Cain as Alfred, although I'd wish we'd had more Bruce/Alfred sparing.
My only other real compliant would have to be Scarecrow's mask was a bit...iffy. That, and Bale (who I'm sure can act) really could have been a lot better, particularly in the Batman scenes.
In many ways, I feel sorry for Heath Ledger. Given that the media are beefing up his 'depression' and, it's a shame that this role is going to be seen as re-enforcing some of that. As for his take on The Joker, I prefer Jack Nicholson. (Although I haven't had a chance to watch Burton's films properly) Such a talented actor and one who will be missed, particularly here in Australia. (Candy, one of his local films he made recently, really helped to boost the local scene)
So, what did you guys think of this movie?
*Okay Superman Returns wasn't bad, but it was cheesy.
