i wanna speculate about this deal: we have several options... one of which is that Lohaun is actually working with the Herald in some weird, roundabout sort of way... that one doesn't make much sense right now, but I'm not discounting it out of hand... two is that Hebe either likes Wren or owes Lohaun for something, but has little control since they were spotted leaving. three is that there are some weird roundabout orders about Wren because he's special for some reason, and they want him alive? four is that they want Lohaun alive... for whatever reason. and i'm stretching really thin here now, anybody else? personally, i think at this point the massive conspiracy theories make the most sense . -- martian sushi

Ok, Wren was designed to be a weapon, and we have yet to see him placed in a situation where his innate ass-kickery can be shown. Hopefully thats coming up since we have several not-so-nice people about to knock on their door. :-) I can just see him grabbing a gun or knife with that tail and putting it to Lawler's throat. I do so enjoy a good pseudo-anti-hero, you can be a nice guy and still kick butt (go watch escaflowne & prince vaughn), and I'm hoping that was a bit of foreshadowing with the whole "bounty hunter" alias. What I wonder about is the dog like critter - is that his avatar or a mental projection from another being or a memory? Lohaun made a deal with the bad guys earlier, which means they LET her get away with Wren, which prolly means they KNEW what Wren was, which leads me to believe they want Wren fairly intact to study and possibly use. I'd say the only reason they'd want Lohaun alive is for either her knowledge as the last scientist alive from the installation or as a control on Wren. I can see the potential for an alligiance change on Hebe's part later on (re: the conversation with the mysterious person around the bonfire). Didn't seem to me she was all that convinced about the reasoning behind the massacre, and she might end up doing some more digging on her own. Thats my two cents & I expect proper change.

pssst: the 'big doglike thing' (aka Winter) is one of the aliens... why he's in Wren's head, that I don't know right now... I could foresee an allegiance change from Hebe... sometime in the future... I don't imagine it'll be soon though. I dunno, my money's on Irshen for this upcoming escapade... I think it's too early for Wren to go psycho and kill all the badguys... save that for chapter 36 plus I think Irshen is cool. d'zat count as proper change? -- the martian

Psst! Sushi! Winter being an alien has not been confirmed yet! (In fact, what he is exactly will not be stated for about four or five books yet. Just to let you know.)Btw, great theories everyone, and thanks for sharing! You have no idea what a help it is to here what people are thinking!

*chuckle* I'm glad you like him. Though I must admit, I never expected anybody to really give a crap about him. Though I also never expected the comic to lag in this part of the story for so long... That would be my fault, again with the non-updating.
(Though I did just update one! Woo!)

all right!
so Hebe doesn't want the Herald to get Wren! Why?!?! does she like him particularly? it doesn't seem like she has a particular fondness for him, since she just calls him 'the boy'. does she think he's important? She seems to have some personal connection with Lohaun on some level... perhaps they are old friends?
And Hebe is totally chewing Lo out for coming to meet with her instead of running right away... she's giving Lo windows Lo can't see, for whatever reason...
Anway - I wanna see where this conversation goes! Looks like we could learn a lot more from both of them here!

I can't figure it out exactly; and I won't try. I cannot really add anything except for some spec on details such as - Lawler being killed painfully to the cheers of fans
- Dain being the one to switch sides
- Hebe, Dain, and Lawler are slapped by Wren's tail, which causes them agony but no real injury; which allows our friends to escape temporarily.

you know, the strange thing is... I kinda like Lawler.... in a weird, twisted way... I mean, at least he's more likable than Dain...

I know: Lawler is the badguy sidekick that goes over to the good side in the end! Yes, he is more likeable because he is more cheerful than Dain....in a twisted, demented, sociopathic way...

Well, I for one agree with Sushi that Winter's probably one of the aliens. My guess is that Wren somehow has a bit of the aliens' DNA in him (hence the strong similarity between Wren's tail and Winter's). This gives him some kind of bond with them that leads to Winter's appearance in his dreams. However, I can't tell at this point whether Winter is actually some telepathic outside figure or some strange projection of Wren's subconcious.
Of course, this link would make Wren fairly important, but I don't have enough information to make a guess as to how so.
And I have a strange but utterly unfounded suspicion that there's going to be betrayal on both sides.
